“Jyotish” is the Sanskrit word for “science of light.” We know that everything in the universe is comprised of matter and energy in some form or another, but today’s physicists are coming to a conclusion that the sages in ancient India likely already knew – that everything in physical reality is ultimately made of light.
Human beings are not exempt from this rule. In our purest form we’re essentially light beings behaving as conscious physical matter. Even cosmic rays, which are highly charged photons of light, have been observed interacting with – and becoming – physical matter themselves.
We also know for a fact that planets emit energetic frequencies. These frequencies can be measured through infrared (a type of electromagnetic radiation) and translated into sound and color wavelengths.

It just so happens that certain precious gemstones, with their specific color frequencies, resonate on the same wavelengths as the celestial bodies in our solar system. Light and Color Therapy through Jyotish Gemstones
You may have already heard that Jyotish gems should “lightly touch the skin” when set into jewelry. This is an ancient Vedic rule that was put in place to ensure that a gemstone’s frequencies are effectively transmitted – if the stone is set too high, or with metal underneath it, its beams of light and color won’t come through properly and the gemstone won’t produce results.
Light and color therapy in action: You can see the light beam of this yellow sapphire penetrating the skin of the wearer. The way Jyotish gemstones work therapeutically is quite similar to how lasers work: laser beams inherently align and unify energetic frequencies. Concentrated beams of light passing thorough gemstones do the same thing. (There’s a reason that gems like rubies are used in laser technology!)
Wear The Right Gemstones for the Best Results
For a gem to be effective for Jyotish, it must be untreated and as close to flawless as possible. Significant inclusions or treatments will prohibit it from working properly. Stones that are of optimal clarity, vivid color, and free of treatments are exceptionally rare and very powerful when properly faceted and worn on the body.
It’s ideal to wear a gemstone that vibrates to the same frequency as the most auspicious planets in your birth chart – often (but not always) the rulers of your 1st, 5th, and 9th houses. Strengthening auspicious planets with gemstones translates into receiving the best possible results for Jyotish, neutralizing old negative karma and redirecting conscious tendencies and behaviors for the better.
Contrary to some astrologers’ beliefs, a gemstone for a malefic planet does not appease its negative influence, it only strengthens it. This creates imbalances in the wearer’s energy field promoting discordant, stressful, and challenging karma moving forward.
