Reiki

Reiki can also be done from a distance! Reiki practitioners can help without being in the same room.

Reiki is an energy healing technique in which practitioners use their hands to deliver energy to your body. Improving the flow of energy and removing blockages can enable relaxation, relieve pain, speed healing, and reduce other symptoms of illness.

The form of Reiki that most people practice today was originated by Dr. Mikao Usui, who was born in Japan in 1865. His intense spiritual practices culminated in a profound revelation in the 1920s that led to the practice now called Reiki. In the 1930s, a Japanese-American woman named Hawayo Takata first brought Reiki to the United States. It is now widely practiced around the world.

There are a number of potential health benefits of Reiki:

  1. Promotes relaxation and stress relief

  2. Improve overall health and well-being

  3. Stimulate your immune system

  4. Relieve pain and tension

  5. Promote natural, self-healing

Reiki can promote general relaxation, wellness, and spiritual growth. Health conditions that reiki has been used to help treat include:

  • Anxiety

  • Chronic pain

  • Cancer

  • Depression

  • Digestive issues

  • Fatigue

  • Heart Disease

  • High blood pressure

  • Immune system disorders

  • Infertility

  • Insomnia and other sleep disorders

  • Emotional trauma and PTSD

More than 800 hospitals in the United States currently offer Reiki services for patients suggesting traditional medicine sees value in Reiki.

A review article in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine found reasonably strong evidence for Reiki being more effective than placebo, suggesting that Reiki attunement leads to a quantifiable increase in healing ability.

Reiki treatments typically last between 45 - 90 minutes and happen in a peaceful, private setting. Reiki can be done lying down or seated. Reiki can even be done from a distance!

  • Typically, you lie on a table  or sit in a comfortable chair fully clothed

  • Reiki practitioners gently place their hands on or above your body in specific energy locations for about 3-10 minutes at each location

  • Practitioners move their hands based on how they feel the energy flow or blockages

  • There is no pressure or manipulation of your body like with massage

  • Practitioners hands may become hot or cool throughout the treatment

  • Most people feel a deep sense of relaxation and a sense of calmness

There are very few regulations governing this field. There are a number of things you can do to find a reputable reiki practitioner.

  • Ask friends or family if they have recommendations in your area

  • Healthcare providers and hospitals often offer reiki or can recommend practitioners

  • Seek practitioners with formal training. Reiki practitioners may have level 1, level 2, or Master level training.

  • Ask for a consultation and inquire about the practitioner’s level of experience and ask them to describe a session

  • Finding a good Reiki practitioner is a personal decision, trust your instincts and choose a practitioner that you feel comfortable with
